That headache neither your doctor nor optician can treat could be down to your teeth.
When it comes to reoccurring headaches the first thing we tend to do is visit the doctor or optician. However, more and more professionals are realising that headaches can be caused by the way the teeth bite together. When you close your jaw your teeth should meet at the same time. If a tooth or teeth touch before all the others, stress can be placed on the teeth, bone, jaw joints and muscles. The problems caused by this are called occlusal problems. If your teeth (or jaw) are out of line you could find yourself experiencing a number of symptoms such as:
- Permanent toothache
- Jaw ache
- Difficultly opening and closing your jaw
- Clicking, clenching or grinding the teeth
- Ringing or buzzing in the ears
- Continual headaches (especially after sleep)
- Sinus pain
- Pain in your neck and shoulders
In some cases, sufferers of occlusal problems do not experience any of the above, but they do notice changes in their mouth. These can include:
- Teeth becoming worn down or flattened
- Teeth becoming loose
- Teeth, fillings or crowns breaking
- Dental sensitivity or aching
What is the procedure?
If your dentist believes your symptoms are due to incorrect bite, you may be given a bite guard – sometimes referred to as a night guard. You will be measured and fitted for your bite guard to ensure that when you bite down on it, all of your teeth are meeting at the same time in a position where your muscles are relaxed.Depending on the severity of your symptoms, you may be required to wear your bite guard all the time, or just during the night. If your bite guard relieves you of your unwanted symptoms, your dentist may recommend permanent tooth or teeth correction. At Ecladent, as well as having a wealth of experience in all areas of dentistry, our friendly and compassionate team will always listen to your concerns and be able identify potential dental occlusal symptoms. If you ever have any questions about your dental health, or to book an appointment at Ecladent, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
